Mr. Siegel is a founding partner of the law firm of Stone McGuire and Siegel.

For over thirty years, Mr. Siegel has successfully represented many individuals and entities in both federal and state civil and criminal cases, investigations, and prosecutions involving business disputes,  public corruption, tax fraud, securities fraud, commodities fraud, real estate fraud, financial structuring, health care, environmental and RICO violations.  Mr. Siegel’s practice has also focused on appraisal law and violations by appraisers of the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice and appraisal Codes of Ethics.

Mr. Siegel’s experience includes successfully defending officers in publicly held corporations in   investigations by the Securities and Exchange Commission and in federal securities fraud class actions.  Mr. Siegel has also represented municipalities in federal and state security fraud cases and in federal criminal investigations.  Mr. Siegel also assisted in the creation and implementation of a compliance program for a large Chicago area municipality and served on the municipality’s Board of Ethics.

Before entering private practice, Mr. Siegel served as an Assistant United States Attorney in Chicago in both the Civil and Criminal Divisions.   Mr. Siegel also worked as a federal law clerk to a Judge on the United States District Court in the Southern District of Illinois and for a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Judicial Circuit.

Mr. Siegel is a former Adjunct Professor of Law at both Loyola University and John Marshall School of Law.  Mr. Siegel has lectured on many topics including the prevention of federal and civil liability, on health care compliance issues, and on various tax liability issues.

EXPERIENCE:

  • From 1975 to 1977, clerked for federal judge Harlington Wood, Jr. in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois and then in the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Judicial Circuit.
  • From 1977 to 1983 served as Assistant United States Attorney in the Northern District of Illinois in both the criminal and civil divisions.  During that time, Michael prosecuted a wide variety of criminal cases including securities fraud, public corruption, tax fraud, postal fraud, and customs cases.
  • From 1983 to the present, has been in private practice where he has defended numerous criminal and civil cases involving securities fraud, tax fraud, public corruption, health care fraud and other criminal and civil business litigation matters. Michael recently represented a CEO and board member of a New York Stock Exchange Company in a federal criminal investigation, an SEC investigation, and in multiple securities fraud civil class action law suits.  He also recently represented the former CEO of a New York Stock Exchange Company in a three month securities fraud class action trial in Columbia South Carolina.
  • Over the last 20 years he also represented the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers as an internal prosecutor for appraisers who have violated the Ethical Code of the Institute.
